1. The viscosity of epoxy adhesives is correlated with the temperature. Temperature increases tend to increase flowability and decrease viscosity. Heating the adhesive will reduce its viscosity. To prevent premature cure or degradation, the temperature must be carefully controlled during heating. Lowering the temperature may increase viscosity.
2. Component Ratios Epoxy adhesives are typically made up of epoxy resin, and curing agents. By adjusting their ratios, you can alter the viscosity. The viscosity of epoxy resin is increased by adding more resin, while the amount of curing agent decreases. To ensure that the bonding strength and performance of the epoxy resin are not compromised, ratio adjustments need to be made within a specific range.
3. Diluent additives reduce viscosity. Addition of the appropriate amount improves flowability. Alcohol, ester and ketone solvents are common diluents. To avoid any negative effects on curing time and strength, the diluents must be added in a controlled manner. Choose diluents that are compatible to achieve the best cured performance.
4. The physical process of stirring and mixing is one way to reduce viscosity. This reduces the intermolecular interaction in adhesives. Control speed and duration of stirring to avoid performance losses. Mix resin thoroughly with curing agent to achieve optimal cure properties.
5. The viscosity of epoxy resins varies. To reduce the adhesive viscosity, select a resin with a lower viscosity that is suitable for your specific application and processing conditions.
